Refresh Weekend 2010

UPDATE: Learn more about Refresh Weekend 2010

48 Hours. 1 Great Cause.

RefreshIndy, in partnership with the Indiana University School of Informatics at IUPUI, is bringing together the best professional and student talent in Indianapolis to develop three websites for three local non-profit organizations in 48 hours or less.

What is this for?

We're putting this event together to provide area charities with great, sustainable websites to help bolster giving and operations. This is for fun, learning and giving back to our community. Plus, it's a really great challenge.

Who is this for?

This event benefits several of the city’s non-profit organizations with a demonstrated need for new or enhanced websites they may not otherwise be able to obtain. Plus, it's a great learning opportunity for eager students at the Indiana University School of Informatics at IUPUI and everyone else involved.

Why now?

Why not now? Like many, the non-profit sector is facing the harsh realities of our current economy. We are happy to lend our services to help them address the needs of our community.

Why Refresh & Informatics?

RefreshIndy brings together some of the top professionals in the city. The Indiana University School of Informatics at IUPUI is creating the next great generation of great website designers, developers and media artists. It's a perfect match.

Information for Students

Aspiring website designers, developers, photographers, videographers and writers who are current students of the Indiana University School of Informatics at IUPUI are welcome to participate. You'll join a team with three other students to produce a complete and publishable website. You'll work side-by-side with some of the city’s most talented web professionals while also giving back to the community. This is a great learning opportunity for experience in managing tight deadlines, working with clients and building a strong network of relationships with local professionals and other students.

Information for Professionals Ready to Volunteer

Refresh has lined up some great professionals from around Indy to be project managers of each group. You'll be responsible for leading a team with other students in developing a complete website in less than 48 hours.

When, Where and How?

This all happens starting at 6 PM on Friday, January 15, 2010 in the Informatics and Communications Technology Complex on the IUPUI Campus. All of the hardware, software and other resources you'll need will be provided by the Indiana University School of Informatics at IUPUI. Dual-boot computer labs will be used, meaning teams can work on either Windows or Mac.

Mayor Ballard will be attending the opening of our event at 6 PM to say a few special words to our volunteers. In addition, we're serving dinner from our friends at Marco's Pizza starting at 5:15 PM on the 4th floor of the Informatics Complex.

All teams will be required to develop their website using any method they see fit, but they must use an open-source content management system (CMS), such as Drupal, Joomla or WordPress (no proprietary systems are permitted). Teams must address the specific needs of the non-profit organization in the design and development of the website, including the organization’s ability to manage and maintain the website. The organizations you'll be working for will be named at the start of the competition. Tricky, huh?
